Tri-Met Budget Out of Control? Streetcar Again?

To All COLA LO Members,

This week the LO Review, the Oregonian, and several blogs all reported on the deepening budget crisis at Tri-Met.    The proposed solution is to reduce service and increase fees.

Unfortunately the cutbacks may impact service to Lake Oswego.

Its an ongoing issue at the agency that controls transit in the area but also a sore spot to LO residents especially those on the Westside that feel under served by the system.

Articles can be found at:   Tri-Met Budget Cuts and End is near.   Also in the Oregonian Higher Fares and The Full List of Cuts

The irony is that during discussions on Streetcar the issue of Trimet not having operating funds was of concern but the City Council chose to ignore this issue and move ahead in their 4-3 vote.

Imagine the costs of this decision given the current Tri-Met budget crisis?

Hindsight may again prove to be very informative as we watch the outcome of this latest situation and apply it to the long term direction of our City Council.   Many are speculating that Streetcar is only suspended and that it will return again after the election.

Only time will tell but the latest issues certainly show us the potential consequences.
